How to Win at Tile Merge: Number Puzzle Strategy
Tile Merge is played on a 4x4 board where every slide adds a new tile, usually a 2 and sometimes a 4. The board fills up fast if you merge at random. The best players follow a simple system that keeps big tiles together and the board tidy. Here is how it works.

Pick a corner and stay there
Choose one corner, for example the bottom left, and keep your highest tile there for the whole game. Mostly use the two directions that push tiles toward that corner, here Down and Left. Use the third direction, Right, only when you have to. Avoid the fourth, Up, because it can pull your big tile out of the corner.
Build a chain along the edge
Line up tiles along the bottom row in falling order from the corner: for example 128, 64, 32, 16. When the next tile matches its neighbour, the whole chain collapses into the corner in a few moves. Once the bottom row is full, start a second row above it running in the opposite direction, like a snake.
Keep the edge row full
Using Right is only safe when the bottom row is completely full, because then your corner tile cannot slide away. Before you press a risky direction, check whether a new tile could appear in your corner. If the bottom row has a gap, a stray 2 can land there and block your chain for a long time.
If you are forced to press the risky direction, follow it straight away with a move back toward your corner. That usually pulls the big tile back home before a new tile can steal its place. Calm, deliberate moves beat fast swiping every time.
Merge small tiles early
Do not let lots of 2s and 4s pile up across the board. Merge them as soon as you can, ideally near your chain so they feed into it. A board full of small, unmatched tiles is the main reason games end early. Fewer, bigger tiles leave more empty space for new ones.
Save the undo
You get just one undo per game, so do not spend it on a small slip. Keep it for a genuine disaster, such as accidentally pulling your biggest tile out of the corner. When you reach the milestone tile, keep playing: the same corner system works for even higher tiles.
Questions
- How many undos do I get?
- One per game. Save it for a move that would wreck your corner strategy.
- What tiles appear after each move?
- Usually a 2, and about one time in ten a 4.
- Which direction should I avoid?
- The one that moves your big tile out of its corner. If your corner is bottom left, avoid Up.
