Road Hop Tips: How to Hop Farther

In Road Hop your score is the furthest row you reach, so every safe hop forward counts. Roads, rivers and railway lines each need a different approach, and a hungry eagle punishes hesitation. This guide covers reading the lanes, timing traffic, riding logs, beating trains and keeping a steady pace forward.

Read the lanes ahead

Grass rows are safe places to rest, though trees block some squares. Road lanes carry cars and trucks moving in one direction at a steady speed. Rivers must be crossed on floating logs, because the water is deadly. Railway lines look empty until a red light flashes and a train races through. Before leaving the grass, look at the next few lanes as a group rather than one at a time.

Cross roads with patience

Each road lane has its own direction and speed, so think about where the gap will be when you land, not where it is now. Hop just after a vehicle passes in front of you. Use sidesteps along the grass to line up with a gap instead of jumping in and hoping. For several roads in a row, pause on the grass first and time the whole crossing.

Ride the logs

Logs carry you sideways with the current. Land near the middle of each log so you have room on both sides, and keep hopping forward while the logs line up. If a log drifts you toward the edge of the play area, get off soon, either forward onto the next log or back to safety. Waiting too long on a moving log is one of the easiest ways to lose a run.

Respect the trains

A flashing red signal means a train is coming. Stay off the rails until it has passed completely, then cross straight away. Never stand on the tracks to wait for a gap in the next lane; step back onto the grass or road you came from instead. A train lane next to a busy road is the time to slow down and look twice.

Keep moving forward

The screen creeps forward, and an eagle swoops in if you go about eight seconds without progress or fall too far behind. Short pauses to time a crossing are fine, but take any safe forward hop as soon as it appears. Coins are counted separately from your score, so grab them only when they sit on a safe path.

Questions

Can I hop backwards?
Yes. Press Down or swipe down to step back a row, which is handy for escaping a lane at the last moment.
Do trees block me?
Yes. You cannot hop into a square with a tree, so plan your path around them before a crossing.
What are coins for?
Coins are collected along the way and shown at the end of each run. They do not change your score, but collecting 20 in one run earns an achievement.
