Five Dice Strategy: How to Score Higher

Five Dice gives you 13 turns, 13 boxes and three rolls per turn, and every box can be used only once. Luck decides single turns, but smart choices about which dice to keep and which box to fill decide the final score. This guide explains the upper bonus, the value of each lower box and how to rescue a bad turn.

Chase the upper bonus

Scoring 63 or more in the ones to sixes boxes earns a 35-point bonus. The easy way to think about it is three of each number: three ones, three twos and so on add up to exactly 63. Every four of a kind in the high numbers gives you a cushion. Scoring only two fives or sixes puts you behind, so be careful with those boxes.

Know what each box is worth

Three and four of a kind score the total of all five dice, so they love high numbers. A full house is always 25 and a small straight, any four in a row, is 30. A large straight of five in a row is 40, and five of a kind is 50. Chance scores the total of the dice, and works best as a safety net for a high but messy roll.

Choose what to keep

After the first roll, keep the dice that point toward the most valuable open box. Pairs and triples of high numbers serve both the upper section and the kind boxes. If you roll four dice in a row early, keep them and roll for the straight, because both straight boxes pay well. Avoid keeping a single high die while chasing two different goals.

Plan the late game

In the last few rounds, check which boxes are still open before your first roll and aim for those. A large straight or five of a kind needs luck, so if you still need them late, use all three rolls on them. If a turn fails completely, dump the roll into the box you are least likely to fill anyway.

Take a zero wisely

Sometimes a zero is the right score. Putting a bad roll into five of a kind, or the ones box, costs little compared with spending Chance or a high upper box on a poor result. Keep Chance open as long as you can, because it is your best rescue for a turn that goes wrong in the middle of the game.
