Mill

📖 Read the strategy guide ›

Mill is the ancient strategy game also known as nine men’s morris. Each player has nine pieces to place on a board of three nested squares. Line up three of your pieces along a line to form a mill and take one of your rival’s pieces. Once all pieces are placed, slide them to neighbouring points, and when you are down to three you can fly anywhere. Play the computer on Easy, Medium or Hard, or challenge a friend on the same device.

How to play

  1. Choose vs AI or 2 players, and a difficulty.
  2. Take turns placing your nine pieces on empty points.
  3. Line up three pieces on a line to form a mill and take a rival piece.
  4. When all pieces are placed, slide a piece to a neighbouring empty point; with three pieces left you may fly anywhere.
  5. Win by leaving your rival with two pieces or no legal move.

Controls

Computer
Click a point to place a piece, or click a piece and then its destination (dragging works too). Arrow keys and Enter also work; U undoes a move.
Phone and tablet
Tap a point to place, or tap a piece and then where it should go. You can also drag pieces.

Tips

  • Pieces on the middle square’s cross points have the most neighbours.
  • Try to build two lines that each need one more piece, so your rival cannot block both.
  • A mill you can open and close again every turn is very hard to stop.

Questions

Which pieces can I take after a mill?
Any rival piece that is not part of a mill. If all of them are in mills, you may take any piece.
What is flying?
When a player has only three pieces left, they may move a piece to any empty point instead of a neighbouring one.
