Belote

Belote is the classic trick-taking card game loved in France and far beyond. Four players form two teams of two, with partners sitting opposite. Using a 32-card deck, one player takes the turned-up suit as trumps (or names another suit in the second round), then everyone tries to win tricks holding the most valuable cards: the Jack and Nine of trumps, Aces and Tens. Score Belote-Rebelote with the King and Queen of trumps, sweep all eight tricks for a Capot, and be the first team to 1000 points. Play with a computer partner or online with friends.

コツ

• Only take trumps with a strong hand: the Jack or the Nine of trumps plus another trump or a side Ace is a good start.
• When your partner is surely winning the trick, add a Ten or an Ace to it to pile up points.
• Count the trumps that have been played so you know when your side Aces are safe to lead.

What is Belote-Rebelote?

If one player holds both the King and Queen of trumps, their team scores 20 extra points. The player says “Belote” when playing the first one and “Rebelote” with the second.

What happens if the taking team scores less?

The taking team is “dedans”: the defenders score all 162 points of the deal, plus their own Belote if they have it, and the takers score nothing but their Belote.

1. You and your partner sit opposite each other and play against the other two players.
2. Everyone gets 5 cards and one card is turned up: take its suit as trumps or pass. In the second round you may name a different suit instead.
3. The taker receives the turned-up card plus 2 more, the others 3 more, so everyone holds 8 cards.
4. Follow the suit led; if you can't, you must trump and beat any trump already played, unless your partner is already winning the trick.
5. Trumps rank J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7; the other suits rank A, 10, K, Q, J, 9, 8, 7. The last trick is worth 10 extra points.
6. The taking team must score more than the defenders or the defenders take all 162 points. First team to 1000 (or 500) wins.
