How to Win at Mine Field: Logic Tips & Patterns

Mine Field is a logic puzzle, not a game of luck. Almost every board can be cleared by reading what the numbers tell you. Easy is a 9x9 grid with 10 mines, Medium 16x16 with 40 and Hard 30x16 with 99. Your first dig is always safe and opens a clear area, so every game starts with information.

Read the simple clues

A number says how many mines touch that tile, including diagonals. If a 1 touches only one covered tile, that tile is a mine. If a number already has that many flagged mines around it, every other covered neighbour is safe. Work along the edge of the open area applying these two rules again and again.

Learn the common patterns

Some layouts appear all the time. Along a straight wall of covered tiles, a 1 next to a 1 means the mine is in the two tiles they share, so the tile beyond the second 1 is safe. In a 1-2 next to each other along a wall, the 2 always has a mine on its far side. Spotting these patterns makes the game much faster.

Flag and use quick clears

Flag tiles you have proved are mines. Then click on a revealed number whose mines are all flagged, and its other neighbours are uncovered at once. This quick clear saves many clicks on bigger boards. Only do it when you are sure of your flags, because a wrong flag means it will uncover a real mine.

Count the mines

The mine counter shows how many mines are left. Late in a game this becomes a powerful clue: if only one mine is left and two areas could hold it, the rule that every number must be satisfied usually decides where it is. Always check the count before you resort to a guess.

Keyboard players can move with the arrow keys, dig with Enter or Space and flag with F. On touch screens, long-press to flag or switch between Dig and Flag mode, which helps you avoid accidental digs on a crowded board late in the game.

When you must guess

Occasionally the logic runs out. If you must guess, pick the tile with the best odds and the most to gain. A tile that would open a new area is better than one that only reveals a single number. Make the guess early, before you have done a lot of other work, so a loss costs you less time.

Questions

Can my first dig hit a mine?
No. The first tile you dig and its neighbours are always safe, so you start with an open area.
What is the fastest way to clear tiles around a number?
Flag its mines, then click the number. Its remaining neighbours are uncovered together.
How big are the boards?
Easy is 9x9 with 10 mines, Medium is 16x16 with 40 and Hard is 30x16 with 99.
