How to Win at Rock Drift: Space Shooter Strategy

Rock Drift is a retro space shooter where every big rock you hit splits into smaller, faster pieces. You start with three ships and earn another every 10,000 points. Each wave brings more rocks moving faster, and flying saucers join in. Here is how to stay in control of the chaos.

Split rocks one at a time

Shooting every big rock at once fills the screen with fast little pieces. Instead, break one big rock, then clean up its pieces before starting on the next. Keeping the number of rocks low is the safest way to clear a wave, and small rocks are worth chasing down while there are only a few.

Control your momentum

Your ship keeps drifting after you stop thrusting, and firing also gives a small push backward. Use short taps of thrust and turn to shoot rather than flying toward rocks. Many players stay near the middle of the screen and rotate in place, thrusting only to escape. Remember the screen wraps, so rocks leaving one edge come back on the other.

Bullets wrap around the screen too, and they travel a fair distance before fading. A shot fired across an empty stretch of space can still hit a rock that is coming in from the far side, so keep firing toward where rocks are heading.

Deal with saucers

Flying saucers cross the screen and shoot at you. Large ones are slower and less accurate, while small ones appear in later waves and aim much better. Destroy saucers quickly when you can, but if one appears while you are surrounded by rocks, move to a clear space first.

Use hyperspace as a last resort

Hyperspace teleports your ship to a random spot, avoiding rocks where it can, but it is not guaranteed to be safe. It also needs a couple of seconds to recharge between jumps. Save it for moments when a collision is certain, not as your normal way of dodging.

Plan for extra ships

You earn an extra ship every 10,000 points, up to a maximum of six. After losing a ship, the game waits until the centre of the screen is clear before you come back, and you are briefly protected. Use that moment to take stock of where the rocks are before you start shooting again.

Questions

How do I get extra ships?
Every 10,000 points earns another ship, up to six.
Is hyperspace safe?
Not always. It tries to avoid rocks, but you can still land in danger, and it needs time to recharge.
Why does my ship move backwards when I shoot?
Each shot gives a small kick backward. Use short thrusts to stay in control.
